The Big Bang is one of the best non-horror / non-science-fiction films I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t know what genre you would technically put it in, but I would probably classify it as a mystery. As you can see from the description below though, there are MANY different elements to the story.
If you are not familiar with The Big Bang, it is a new film starring Antonio Banderas, Sam Elliott, Thomas Kretschmann, Snoop Dogg, Delroy Lindo, and Sienna Guillory. Here is the plot synopsis, courtesy of Anchor Bay Films:
Late one night, Los Angeles private investigator Ned Cruz gets a visit from a recently paroled Russian boxer with an intriguing job offer: find Lexie, his missing girlfriend – and the $30 million dollar stash of diamonds she’s hiding. As Detective Cruz sets out to find her, the clues send him to the city’s seediest corners, from a Hollywood action star with a dirty little secret, to an enterprising porn producer who takes a personal interest in his own work, and a kinky waitress with an unusual fetish for particle physics. Lexie proves to be as elusive as she is beautiful and Cruz becomes obsessed with finding her.
With time running out, Cruz discovers the trail leads to a reclusive billionaire and his physicist, intent on recreating The Big Bang underneath the New Mexico desert. Tailed by a trio of cops also looking to find the missing diamonds, and with the body count piling up, Cruz soon realizes that what appeared to be a standard missing person’s case is anything but, and could quite possibly bring about the end of the world as we know it.
Wow…how can you not be intrigued by that synopsis!
I love this film. It is one of those rare gems that is written well and then executed flawlessly. It keeps you guessing, right up to the end. And the twist…wow…I can honestly say I didn’t have a CLUE that it was coming. Very nice.
The cinematography in The Big Bang is excellent, with many angles reminiscent of the styles used in Sin City and even 300. And visually, it is a beautiful film. There’s quite a bit of CG used in certain scenes, specifically for the skyline and night sky shots. But it works very well and the result is fantastic, especially on the Blu-ray version.
The cast is superb as well, with Antonia Banderas bringing his recognizable blend of dark wit and slight stoicism, and Sam Elliott offering a passion-fueled performance to compliment him. I enjoy both actors a great deal, and it is refreshing to see Sam Elliott in a more modern role (I think he is sometimes stereotyped in the cowboy mold). Not to mention Robert Maillet, who is one of the biggest, scariest guys in Hollywood today…he is perfect, playing the Russian boxer.
And the story…it is amazing. I never imagined that particle physics and a mystery of this sort could ever be intertwined. Writer Erik Jendresen weaves together a tapestry of intrigue that borders on the surrealistic. I found myself marveling several times at the ingenuity within the plot. You don’t see films like this very often.
If I were forced to find a negative about The Big Bang, it would probably have to be the casting choice to use William Fichtner as Poley. I like Fichtner as an actor, but I think he is overdone in this role. He is somewhat top-heavy with his delivery style and can be overbearing on-screen. While this attribute is only slightly seen in this film, it is enough to stick out for me.
But with that aside (and that’s very, very minor), The Big Bang is a powerful movie that will draw you in and keep you asking questions all the way through. I don’t see how you can walk away from this film without being entertained on some level. It is smart and inventive, a welcome addition to the mainstream do-overs that seem to be plaguing Hollywood these days.
